Journey to the Cross

Based on Matthew 28: Jesus resurrection

Luke 18:33 “They will whip him and kill him. On the third day, he will rise from the dead!”

“SATTAR! SATTAR! Today is the day!” Milo and A.J. raced into the room where SATTAR was preparing the Time Machine. “Jesus will rise from the dead today!”

“Yes! It is Resurrection Day! Easter Day is the day we celebrate when Jesus was resurrected from the dead. This means he defeated death and sin and came back to life.”

“How did he do it, SATTAR? How did Jesus come back to life?” A.J. asked.

“It was all God!” SATTAR replied, “God raised Jesus up from the grave. After all, we are talking about the same God who created the universe. He is all powerful! It was all a part of his plan to save us from sin. I think it’s time to go see the grand event for ourselves!”

SATTAR, A.J. and Milo piled into the Time Machine. Their course was set for the tomb at Bethany that Jesus had been buried in three days before.

A follower of Jesus named Joseph had asked for permission to take the body of Jesus from the cross where he was nailed to give him a proper resting place. Two of Jesus’ followers had planned to come back after the Sabbath holiday two days later to put spices on the body of Jesus which was the custom.

The Sabbath day was now over. It was dawn on Sunday morning. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

While they were there, there was a powerful earthquake.

A.J., & Milo were trying to steady themselves on the ground as if they were surfing a big wave. “SA-A-A-TTAR! What’s going on!” They shouted.

The roar of the quake was so loud that SATTAR had to shout at the top of his voicebox to be heard. “This is the power of God I was telling you about earlier!”

An angel of the Lord came down from heaven. The angel went to the tomb. He rolled back the stone and sat on it. His body shone like lightning. His clothes were as white as snow. The guards that had been placed there to make sure no one stole the body of Jesus were so afraid of him that they shook and fell over like dead men.

The angel said to the women, “Don’t be afraid. I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here! He has risen, just as he said he would! Come and see the place where he was lying.”

Sure enough, the tomb was empty! Jesus was no longer there. At that moment they remembered when Jesus had told them that he would be killed and that he would come back to life after three days.

“Go quickly! Tell his disciples, ‘He has risen from the dead. He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’”

So, the women hurried away from the tomb. They were afraid, but they were filled with joy. They ran to tell the disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them on the road.

“Look SATTAR!” said Milo, “It’s Jesus!”

“Alive and in person!” A.J., Milo and SATTAR laughed with joy.

“Greetings!” Jesus said. The ladies came to him, took hold of his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee. There they will see me.”

Jesus’ disciples were also overjoyed that Jesus had been raised to life again!

“This week had its ups and downs but I am so glad we stuck it out to see the end.” A.J. said.

“Oh, but it’s not the end!” SATTAR exclaimed. “There is so much more to come. Eventually Jesus goes up to heaven to be with God. But before that he gives his disciples the task of telling the good news about him to the world. There are so many more faith adventures to come for the disciples. And for you!”

Today’s Message For You! Jesus defeated death and sin when he rose from the dead.
